The Class of 2014 was celebrated by family members, peers, faculty, staff and the Board of Governors on Saturday, June 14 during the International School of Luxembourg’s 34th Graduation Exercises at the Grand Theatre in Luxembourg. This class has the extra-special distinction of graduating during the school’s 50th Anniversary year and being addressed by the Prime Minister of Luxembourg, Mr. Xavier Bettel.
The graduation exercises began with “Fanfare and Processional,” by Edward Elgar, performed by the ISL Joint Bands under the direction of Conductor, Thomas Raoult. After the graduating students took their seats, there was a welcome message from Chris Bowman, Director of ISL, and a slide show introducing each member of the graduating class using photos from their childhood.
Graduates Alper Bulut, Morgan Kibler, and Adam Schlegel then took to the stage to perform “Home”by Daughtry. (View the performance)
The first speaker for the event was Student Selected Speaker, Timothy Barker. His talk was humorous and insightful. (View the talk)
Next, Mhari Glober, accompanied by Annick Ernst, performed “Wear Me Out” by Skylar Grey. (View their performance)
Presentation of Awards were next with recipients being congratulated by Director Bowman and ISL’s very first graduate, Matthew Rhodes. Rhodes was the only member of the 1980 graduating class, the first to graduate from the American International School, which would eventually be renamed ISL. Mr. Rhodes then delivered his own remarks to the graduates. (View his remarks)
The programme continued with another musical number, “Viva la Vida” by Coldplay, performed by Annick Ernst and Yuka Hirabayashi. (View their performance)
The honoured guest speaker then took to the podium to officially address the ISL graduates. Mr. Xavier Bettel, Prime Minister of Luxembourg, spoke to the graduates about their upcoming opportunities and the virtue of persistence. (View the Prime Minister's address)
A small band of graduates consisting of Julianna Corsetti, Bram de Vet, Anna Leader, and Babette Weatherell, with Annick Ernst, Rayyan Khan, and Morgan Kibler then performed “Sing” by the band My Chemical Romance. (View the performance)
This performance was followed by Faculty Elected Speaker. Anna Thomassen. and then the presentation of ISL diplomas to each member of the graduating class. (View Anna’s speech)
Upper School Principal, Nicki Crush delivered closing remarks and the graduates were then invited to throw their caps in the air to complete the tradition. (View Mrs. Crush’s remarks)
Members of the audience remained seated as the graduates recessed to “Lady Gaga Dance Mix” arranged by Ted Ricketts, and performed by the ISL Joint Bands.
The graduation exercises were an exciting conclusion to a wonderful 50th Anniversary celebration year.
