Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra Musician Visit at Lower School

ISL’s Grade 5 classes were treated to an amazing learning experience when three professional musicians including Leon Ni, the OPL’s principal trombonist came to ISL to introduce the Brass family to prospective Grade 5 Band students.

Heather and  Leon Ni, and Flavia Comba presented  the history of the instruments through playing the Conch (think of the large shell in Lord of the Flies), the Ram’s Horn, used to this day in certain religious festivals and even a garden hose with a funnel attached to the end! They quickly moved on to a demonstration of the modern Brass instruments including the French Horn, the Euphonium, the Trombone and the Trumpet.

Students were given the chance to ask and to answer questions throughout the presentation. The musicians were impressed with some of the students’ answers to quite complex questions including the different ways that the French horn can change pitches. A guessing game of well known tunes such as Cantina from Star Wars as well as music from Harry Potter and finally a virtuosic Jazz trio, A Pocket full of Wry by Shaw arr. by Jong, brought the presentation to a lively close. Thank you to Grade 5 and to the OPL's musicians.
