Nowadays when you enter Lower School, you’re greeted by a colourful display of self-portraits created by our students from Early Years to Grade 5. Proudly presented by our Lower School artists, these rainbow portraits in the reception area give a message to every student: You belong here.
Guided by Vânia Mendanha, Francesca Marzi, Heather Baker, and Emma Stanford, this project was planned in collaboration with the DEIJ Celebrations & Belonging Committee, with hopes of making it an annual tradition. Each year, students would create a new portrait, a visual record of their growth and individuality.
The display also features Maya Angelou’s inspiring words: "We all should know that diversity makes for a rich tapestry, and we must understand that all the threads of the tapestry are equal in value no matter what their color."
Watch the video below to see this celebration of creativity, diversity, and belonging come to life.
