Jana Bahrich, Class of 2019, was the winner of the Screaming Fields Song Contest with her band, “Francis of Delirium”. Congratulation to this success! Please find below an interview with her:

Please tell us how you started your music career?

When I was 5 years old, I started to learn Violin, but I struggled a lot to learn it and gave up after 4 years. Because of this experience, I felt as if I hated music and I took a break from music for 2 years. Afterwards I started to play French Horn in the school band. However, I did not have a teacher, so I just played along. I can only imagine how bad I was! I stopped again after 3 months.

When we moved from Canada to Luxembourg around 5 years ago, I wanted to annoy one of my friends. She hated this song "Ho Hey" and I taught myself the chords with YouTube videos.  It was far more difficult than I thought, but this is how I started to get back into music. I taught myself the guitar, started to play piano, and rented out a banjo. I even started the French Horn again. This is the only instrument I actually have a teacher for and now I feel pretty good with it. I am even teaching other students. I started to write my first songs when I was 12 years old.

That is quite impressive. What made you to come back to music?

I always loved music and I am always singing. Since I was a child I have always been drawn to music.

Do you compose your music yourself and what are the topics you write about?

Yes. I start with a musical idea and then add lyrics, then I bring my ideas to Chris (drummer) and we add drums and maybe fix the arrangement. Most of the time I write about introspective things - me as a person and human feelings.

Why is your Band called "Francis of Delirium"?

When I visited my grandmother in her nursing home, there was this woman called Francis yelling at us all the time. A lot of people in the home were in a stage of delirium. Francis is the male form, which separates me from the project, because the name isn’t meant to be my stage name, more of a “band” name.

Why is your band just two people?

It creates more intimacy and highlights my voice more. I’m able to show my emotions most effectively through my voice.

What are your future plans?

We are in the process of producing an album. Every day, except weekends, we are preparing for stage performances. And I gather a lot of ideas - right now, I have more than 1400 song ideas on my phone! I have to start planning for the music video production for the "Screaming Fields Song Contest" which was the prize we won. We also received a live performance prize - a Mini Tour in 2020 in Den Atelier, the Philharmonie, and the Rotondes. When we release the single, I will have another show at the Rockhal.

When you think further, what are your plans?

My plan is to go to University but also to keep up my music career. I am lucky enough to do what I want right now and will take advantage of it and see how it goes. Honestly, I am thinking about becoming a teacher, but I am also taking this year to get a clearer idea of what I want to do.

What is your dream?

Probably to headline a big festival.

When will your single and album be released?

The single from the award will be recorded at end of this year in a professional studio. Our album takes more time. We are producing 10 songs in self-production and it will hopefully be out in early 2020.
