ISL Libraries

Library Hours:

Monday-Thursday, 08:00 to 17:00
Friday, 08:00 to 16:00

Library Goals:

  • to help students become effective and efficient users of information;
  • to provide resources to classroom teachers to enhance their curricula; and
  • to promote a love of reading, learning, languages, and libraries.

The ability to locate, use and evaluate information is increasingly important in our society. The librarians work closely with classroom teachers to integrate information skills lessons and literature promotion into the regular classroom curricula. Each library is staffed by a full-time professional librarian along with library assistants.

Our libraries serve as resource centres for the entire ISL community, including students, staff and parents. Because of the international nature of our school, our libraries have many resources that cannot be easily found elsewhere in Luxembourg. We encourage students and families to take advantage of the availability of these materials (books, periodicals, tapes, videos, DVDs, and databases).

Upper School Library - Grades 6 to 12

The upper school library on the first floor of the main building, has a selection of over 15,000 books, including fiction, non-fiction, biographies, books for English language learners of all ages, parenting books and a professional collection for teachers. There is also a growing DVD collection. The library subscribes to over 60 periodicals. Students may visit the library any time during opening hours and teachers may schedule class visits for research. Parents are encouraged to borrow from the library too. There are no limits to the amount of materials individuals may borrow throughout the school year and during all school holidays.

Eleven networked computers are available for student use. They provide access to the library catalogue and various other network-based research tools to which the school subscribes, including Newsbank, UnitedStreaming, Atomic Learning, Encarta and others. They are also linked to the Internet and ISL's intranet and e-mail system.

Lower School Libraries - Pre-School to Grade 5

The Lower School has libraries in the main building and in the Hillside building with a combined collection of over 20,000 items selected to meet the curriculum and student needs of the building in which they are located. Both libraries have multilingual collections of books, magazines, cassettes, videos and DVDs. Eight networked computers are available for students to use and provide access to the library catalogue and various other network-based information resources. During weekly class visits, students learn how to find and use library resources, are introduced to a variety of literature, and borrow materials that they keep until their next library visit when they return or renew them. Teachers also schedule extra visits to the library as needed for research or reading projects and activities, which are planned in collaboration with the librarians. Families are encouraged to visit the library before and after school to borrow books and other materials as often as they wish. We also welcome and encourage parents to volunteer in the Lower School Libraries and have them assist library classes with the checking in and out of books, shelving books, organizing library materials and assisting with special projects.
