The International School of Luxembourg (ISL) welcomed some 300 visiting athletes from 10 international schools at Luxembourg’s Josy Barthel Stadium on Thursday and Friday, 28-29 May, for the annual Track and Field Meet of the Northwest European Council of International Schools (NECIS). Athletes travelled from as far away as Norway, Sweden and Denmark in order to compete. International schools from The Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, and Switzerland also took part. A total of 78 students represented ISL at the meet, 60 of whom competed for medals and 18 competed as guests.

Events got underway somewhat inauspiciously under strength-sapping drizzling rain on Thursday morning which finally gave way to cloudy conditions interspersed with a few rays of sun in the afternoon. Friday’s glorious, performance enhancing sunshine provided a fitting backdrop for the culmination of the meet at the end of the second day. A total of 70 track events and 36 field events were run for both boys and girls in four age categories, ranging from under 12 to over 16.

“The sportsmanship and camaraderie engendered when athletes from different schools get together for a healthy competition such as this makes it worth the effort,” declared ISL Head of Physical Education and Athletics Neil Spencer. “The ISL Community did a wonderful job of supporting the event from raking the long jump pits, to scorekeeping and selling t-shirts, handing out medals, running out to buy starter gun pellets at the last minute, and more! Volunteers from CAL-SPORA Luxembourg officiated the meet and did a wonderful job.”

A total of 500 medals were awarded to athletes over the course of the meet and 121 of these went to ISL athletes: 51 gold, 34 silver and 36 bronze! ISL athletes also broke five existing NECIS Records.
