ISL Students Wow Audience at Second Annual Band Clinic Concert

The International School of Luxembourg’s second annual Band Clinic, a three day course of intensive musical study and practice, culminated on Friday, 15 May, when the school presented its Band Clinic Concert at the Conservatoire de Musique de la Ville de Luxembourg to a very enthusiastic audience! ISL Music Teacher and Band Director, Demosthenes Dimitrakoulakos conducted the ISL Concert Band while special guest conductor Dr John Lynch, Director of Bands at the University of Georgia in the USA conducted the ISL Symphonic Band. Guest artists, performing with the Symphonic Band, included The Ni Ensemble, a Luxembourg-based Brass Quintet with That’s a Plenty and ISL Music Teacher James Libbey on Bagpipes performing Highland Cathedral.

The musically eclectic programme included pieces by David Holsinger, Robert W. Smith, Aaron Copland, and Dmitri Shostakovich, among others. The concert finished with an arrangement of Kiss’ Rock and Roll All Nite complete with a light show, performed by the Symphonic Band along with surprise guest soloist ISL student Matti Konsala on the electric guitar.

A total of 80 Upper School students from grades 6-11 played in the concert; 55 of them in the Concert Band and 25 in the Symphonic Band. Student soloists included: Sayako Tanaka on piccolo, Patricia Cipollitti on flute, Beáta Harakály on alto saxophone, Jesper Wiedenkeller on trumpet, Alex Macdonald on euphonium, Filipe Biral on timpani, and Matt Heinrich on drum set.
