Upper School: Grades 6-12

The extra-curricular sports programme in the Upper School is designed to foster the social and physical development of the participants and to develop a spirit of team play and co-operation. We believe that belonging to a team and taking part in practices can be a valuable experience for young people. Eligible students are encouraged to take part, although participation in the extra-curricular sports programme is voluntary. Winning games and tournaments, although desirable, is not the primary aim of the programme.

Within the limits of our geographical location and schedule, the school attempts to organise games and competitions with teams that are reasonably well-matched with our own in terms of age, size and ability. At present, we are involved to a large extent with the programmes, regulations, and tournaments of the Northwest European Council of International Schools (NECIS) , and to a lesser extent with other international schools, the Ligue des Associations Sportives Estudiantines Luxembourgeoises (LASEL) , the Ligue des Associations Sportives de l'Enseignement Primaire (LASEP), as well as local schools and sports clubs.

Selection for school teams is dependent upon:

  • Sportsmanship - gives encouragement to others; accepts decisions gracefully
  • Effort - tries hard to improve at each practice; exhibits perseverance
  • Attendance - regular attendance; punctual; properly dressed
  • Cooperation - follows instruction; willing to listen; good team member
  • Skill level - demonstrates good skill

Lower School: Grades 3-5

The Lower School extra-curricular sports programme is organised on an intramural basis and provides students the opportunity to participate in volleyball, soccer, basketball, swimming and track & field. The criteria listed above for selection for school teams also applies to Lower School athletes. Participation in the programme is limited to fourth and fifth grade students with the exception of swimming which starts in grade three. Every student taking part is given the opportunity to participate in intramural games.

After an initial training period, which is devoted to learning the skills of the game, the participants are divided into teams and games are scheduled with other schools or local clubs. The coaches make every effort to balance the teams according to ability, age and experience. A formal intramural tournament is also held each season. The coaches select an "all-star" team to represent the school at the Northwest European Council of International Schools (NECIS) tournaments. Only fifth graders may be selected for NECIS; except for swimming and track & field, where fourth graders may also be invited to take part.

Lower School Sports Clubs: Pre-School-Grade 5

In order to promote good health and physical fitness among our younger students who are not yet old enough to take part in extra-curricular team sports, a number of extra-curricular sports clubs are open to children beginning as young as age 3. Offerings include: swimming (swimming lessons, swim clubs and parent-child pool time), gymnastics, track & field, ball games, ballet, hip-hop dance, and soccer.

Physical Education and Extra-Curricular Sports Uniform Policy

Our school-wide PE and Sports Uniform Policy takes effect at the start of the 2009-2010 academic year. We believe this policy will best prepare students for physical activity, both physically and mentally, whilst freely enabling their performances.
