ISL Inaugural Band Clinic Concert with Guest Conductor Dr Stephen Peterson

The International School of Luxembourg hosted its first ever three-day band clinic at the beginning of June, which culminated in a gala concert on the evening of June 3rd at the Conservatoire de Musique in Luxembourg City. Fifty-four middle and high school instrumental music students took part in the clinic and performed a variety of selections learnt over the three-day workshop.
Special guest conductor for the Symphonic Band was Dr Stephen Peterson, a well-known American conductor who taught at Northwestern University in Chicago and at Austin State University in Texas before becoming Director of Bands at Ithaca College in 1998. He has performed with the Chicago Symphony Chorus at Orchestra Hall and at Lincoln Center in New York. Joining him were guest artists Leon Ni on trombone and Heather Ni on trumpet. ISL music teacher Demosthenes Dimitrakoulakos directed the ISL Concert Band.
During the three-day clinic, students studied a variety of musical styles ranging from classical to jazz and blues to rock. The programme comprised a little something for every musical taste. Pieces that were performed included: Egmont Overture, Estampie, Radetzky March, Hungarian Dance No. 5, Nessun Dorma, Cool Blues for Saxophones, Cousins, Pictures at an Exhibition, In the Mood, Night on Bald Mountain, Aztec Dance, Louie Louie, and Smoke on the Water.
