Ethan Schrieberg Receives Fourth Annual Henry J. Leir Award

Leir Award

Grade 11 student Ethan Schrieberg has been awarded the fourth annual Henry J. Leir Prize from the Leir Luxembourg Program-Clark University (LLP-CU) for his essay on the colour green in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby. Ethan joined ISL in 2003 when he moved to Luxembourg with his parents and older brother. At school he has been active in Student Council, the Global Issues Network and the ISL Tennis Team. He plays the guitar and is also interested in theatre. Ethan received his prize from Dr Sunhee Kim Gertz, Co-Director of the LLP-CU at the annual academic awards ceremony for Upper School students in June.

The Leir Luxembourg Program established the Leir Prize four years ago in order to support academic excellence in the humanities. The annual prize of €500 is given to a grade 11 student for an essay in English. Entries are solicited from eligible students and the winner is chosen by a committee of ISL faculty under the auspices of the Upper School English Department.

The Leir Prize was created in honour of Henry J. Leir, a prominent Luxembourg industrialist who eventually emigrated to the USA. “Upon retirement, he devoted his life to philanthropy: helping people, supporting the underprivileged and encouraging research which included providing a space for the humanities,” Dr Gertz told the students as she presented the prize. “This is a writing award and the message is the same as Hannibal’s motto, find a way, or make one. Henry Leir created venues in order to help people make their way.”

The Leir Luxembourg Program was founded by Clark University of Worcester, Massachusetts with the primary goal of “strengthening the international dimension of teaching and research at Clark University, especially through close relations with the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.” The Leir Luxembourg Program-Clark University is based at the Château de Schengen and proposes a study-abroad programme as well as an array of conferences, seminars and student internships.
