An Evening with the Ancient Egyptians at ISL

The Middle School Commons area of the International School of Luxembourg was transformed into a giant pyramid as some 75 students from the Grade 6 classes hosted not one but two Evenings with the Ancient Egyptians’ in late February. Parents, siblings, teachers and friends were treated to an enjoyable and informational event showcasing the students research into every imaginable aspect of ancient Egyptian life, including mummification, hieroglyphics, religion, food and dress, to name but a few.
Students research and presentations highlighted the integration of technology into ISLs curriculum. Students researched their topics using project pathfinders and other electronic learning resources. Classrooms equipped with interactive whiteboards and LCD projectors provided forums for students to present their work. Many students created stop animation films of scenes from ancient Egyptian life using digital cameras and image editing software. These were on display in the Middle School Commons throughout the evening where a gourmet buffet of ancient Egyptian delicacies, prepared by the students, was offered to guests.
The evening opened with a brief gathering in the school auditorium where Grade 6 Social Studies Teacher Nancy Squicciarini paid tribute to Ernst & Young for its ongoing support of ISLs technology programme. Julie Hornsby, a director at Ernst & Young, was present to accept a gift from the students on behalf of the company. She reaffirmed Ernst & Youngs continuing support of technology integration at ISL in her remarks.
